Product to Review: Think Geek Hydrodynamic Building Set
Product Information: ThinkGeek started as an idea. A simple idea to create and sell stuff that would appeal to the thousands of people out there who were on the front line and in the trenches as the Internet was forged. ThinkGeek started as a way to serve a market that was passionate about technology, from programmers, engineers, students, lovers of open source, to the masses that helped create the behind-the-scenes Internet culture.
Three out of the four founding ThinkGeek members started an ISP in the Northern Virginia area way way back in 1995. They couldn't afford Solaris, learned about a free UNIX-like OS, and spent almost an entire day downloading it onto over 50 floppies for installation on an old 486 laptop with no cd-rom. After a few years with the ISP gig, the ThinkGeek idea popped into their heads, and, operating out of a spare room at the ISP office they setup shop and launched the site on Friday the 13th, 1999.
A month or so later they were Slashdotted. Promptly thereafter, ThinkGeek was acquired by the good folks at Andover.Net who through an acquisition and a bunch of name changes, is now known as Geeknet. So we're part of a cool gaggle of sites including slashdot.org, sourceforge.net, linux.com, and freshmeat.net. Pretty nice company to be amongst, eh? They're pretty proud of it!
All the founding members are still in town, and they've continued to grow their product line, expand their staff (including several canines) and enhance the way they interface with customers.
My Opinion: This is ANOTHER Insta Hit from Think Geek! We received the Hydrodynamic Building Set and my grandson thinks it's Christmas already. This is the 3rd product we have reviewed from Think Geek and he has made his Christmas list and it all comes from Think Geek. He loves anything to do with Science and Think Geek has alot of Science products.
This is what the Hydrodynamic Building Set is about:
Water is everywhere. It covers 71% of the Earth's surface and composes about 112% of the human body. Gaining control over water would be an awesome super power, but for now we are stuck with using science to master water. Good thing someone invented this Hydrodynamic Building Set. It makes science fun again. But this kit isn't a simple connect the dots - you have to do some thinking!
The instruction manual shows you how the girders connect, how to build the various tanks, and some rendered images of completed projects - but not step-by-step. Your entire model gets built up from the bottom of the carrying case, which acts as the water reservoir and also has a special footing to be the structure's foundation. Level by level, you build your support frame and add your tanks. Then connect all the tubes, add in the valves, and turn on the electric pump. If you've done it right, you'll have an awesome construction everyone will marvel at (a little food coloring helps). Fail and you're all wet - quite probably literally.
And Kids: Build something with this kit for a Science Fair Project and you are guaranteed to win (this guarantee not guaranteed)!
Hydrodynamic Building Set:
- Includes: 300 pieces (including girders, tank parts, tubing, valves, tube connectors, meters, etc), electric pump with AC adapter, carrying case/structure base and instruction book.
- Base Dimensions: 10" X 16" X 3"
- Warranty: Manufacturer's Limited Warranty
- Important Notes
- 1/4" airline tubing can be purchased at any aquarium store if more tubing is desired.
- Not for use with liquids other than water.
- Can be built into different structures over and over (that is, not a single use kit).
- More than one kit can be combined for massive structures.
Some of the things he is learning to build are:
- Ice Cream Factories,
- Oil Refineries
- Water Treatment Plants
- Distillation Plant
- Anything his little mind can come up with
Buy it for only $79.99 regularly $89.99.
One of my extremely lucky readers will win a Hydrodynamic Building Set!

OK, so how can I pick just one thing to say I like??? I want most of this stuff and my son would want the rest! I guess I'd pick the Desktop Carnivorous Plant Set if I could only have one thing. My son would love to experiment with the DaVinci's Wood Catapult Kit.
